It’s Troy Time!!!

MY CURRENT RATINGS:
:film: 7/10 Movie: Troy (2004)

Well this weekend just past our local cinema did one of those preview thingies of Troy, which is cool since it doesn’t go on general release till Friday. Maybe they have been listening to me complaining about having to wait an age for movies to reach these shores… nah, who am I kidding.

Anyways.. I’m of two minds about Troy. There were parts I enjoyed — like the Trojan horse, and others that just didn’t satisfy me at all. The battles sequences were not bad, but.. didn’t give me that goosebumpy feeling that I got when I was watching Gladiator, or Spartacus, or LOTRs. Maybe I’ve just been spoilt my Peter Jackson and his trilogy, dagnabbit! There was also times in the movie that I was bored and was wondering how long I had to go — not really a good thing for a movie to be doing.

So the question is, do I love this film and would I recommend it – no, I don’t love it. It’s possible I could grow to like it after another viewing, then again I could end up loathing it with avengence. If I’m truthful, I think that Van Helsing gave me a more thrilling ride for my £3.30 cinema ticket than this did, which is sooo wrong, since I actually normally like these kinds of movies.

Maybe it was the too many sequences of bodies being burnt so that they would enter the afterlife – but the film could have definitely had a few things cut to shorten the length down. I really wanted to like this film and maybe I went into it with higher expectations than normal.

Pitt and Bana did great jobs, and O’Toole portrayed the Trojan king well. I wasn’t overly impressed with Bloom’s performance, but again with the LOTR spoiling me!

All in all a 7/10. Worth a viewing if you go in with no predefined expectations, just don’t expect a nice Gladiator-esque/LOTR movie!
