Well that was certainly an interesting race, with quite a lot of action. There was overtaking, black flags, safety cars, crashes — and through it all, the two red marauding Ferrari cars managed to bring themselves home in first and second.
At the start of the race was the question over whether Ferrari were going to let Barrichello take the win at Indy, but of course, no one should have expected Schumacher to make it that easy for the Brazilian. Rubens had been quick all through the event, more importantly through qualifying where he netted the pole, and the best Michael could do was achieve second.
It wasn’t a very clean start to the race – Montoya had car problems that prompted a quick retreat for the spare car, and although Rubens and Michael held onto their starting places going into the first corner – chaos erupted towards the end of the grid where there was a multicar accident that prompted the first safety car of the day, allowing the Marshalls to clear up the debris without putting themselves in danger.
With the restart, Michael managed to get the jump on Rubens going down the mainstraight, crossing the line together with an identical time, but with Michael making the passing move stick and moving into first position before the first corner of the track.
It didn’t take long for the safety car to be brought out again, this time for the Horrific crash involving car #4 – Ralf Schumacher’s Williams. Ralf needed help getting out of his race car – although early reports say that he’s going to be ok – and although the accident happened going into the final turn #13, his car ended up a good way down the pit straight! It took them ages to clean up the track and make sure that Ralf was going to be ok, and the majority of the field took the opportunity to refuel. With the red Ferrari cars queuing up to take on fuel. Only a couple of cars opted not to do this, including both BAR’s.
Montoya was eventually black flagged for another rule infringement, the second by the william’s team in as many races and was related to his use of the spare car at the beginning!!!!
The race ended with Michael taking another win
#8 from the 9 events – the guy is on a roll!! Rubens following him home in second position, and the final podium slot being taken up with Sato – his first ever podium!! AWWW
