The Defiant was launched on stardate 47538.5 from the Antares Ship Yards.

It was orignally classed as an Escort class starship, and development on her began in 2366, as a small, highly powered, heavily armed starship, that was intended to help defend against the possibilty of a Borg invasion.

However, the Borg threat became less urgent, and design flaws were discovered in the final shakedown cruise of the ship, and she was put on the backburner.

It wasn't until 2371, that she was assigned to Deep Space nine, and equipped with a cloaking device, which was on loan from the Romulans that she came into her own. Benjamin Sisko, with the help of chief O'Brien managed to iron out the flaws, and she became a lean mean fighting machine.

The Defiant carried at least 2 shuttlecraft.

Her Dedication Plaque features a quote from John Masefield. : "All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by"

The Defiant was assigned to Deep Space Nine in 2371, under the command of Captain Benjamin Sisko, in the hopes it would be useful in the hostilities that were growing with the Dominion

The USS Defiant was equipped with a class-7 warp drive, which was incredibly powerful, so much so it could ionise nebula gases, which made it detectable in the badlands even whilst under cloak.

The original Defiant was destroyed in late 2375 by Breen forces, just before the final stages of the Dominion war. However, several weeks later, the Defiant class, USS Sao Paulo was assigned as a replacement, and Captain Sisko was granted special dispensation to rename the ship to the USS Defiant.

The Defiant was first seen in the Episode: 'The Search Part 1', destroyed in 'The changing faces of Evil' and the Sao Paulo was renamed in 'The dogs of war'
