He can be at times, both helpful and difficult, secretive yet open, knowledgable and unaware.

Garak suffers from Claustrophibia. This could have been a result of his father locking him in a cupboard when he had been bad. The claustrophobia became more frequent during the Dominion war, because he felt guilty of helping the Federation slaughter his people.

Garak is a good pick pocket, is an expert at Cardassian secret military communicaton codes. He posses intricate knowledge of the inner workings of the Cardassian Government and military operations. He often knows of important events before most people. He has access to top secret codes and security clearances. He also has some very highly placed friends and acquaintances, and as many highly placed enemies. One of whom is Gul Dukat.
Being the only Cardassian on the station, Garak befrended Ziyal, the half bajoran daughter of Gul Dukat.
When he was a member of the Obsidian Order, Garak was fitted with a device that flooded his brain with endorphins. The device was designed to help resist torture, but when he was exiled to the station, he found life unbareable, and activated the device permanently. The device malfunctioned in 2371, and Dr. Bashir was forced to remove it, in order to save Garak's life.
Garak was first seen in the Episode: 'Emissary'
