Kira was originally a freedom fighter in the Bajoran militia, before she got assigned as first officer and liason to Deep Space Nine in 2369 after the Cardassian's withdrew from her planet.

Kira joined the Shakaar resistance cell, of the Bajoran underground in 2355, and spent the first 26 years of her life under Cardassian occupation.

In 2369, Kira opposed the decision of the Bajoran Provisional Government, to enlist Federation assistance in maintaining Deep Space Nine.

Kira had a very stong and deep abiding faith in the prophets, and the death of Kai Opaka in 2369 stuck her profoundly. She also firmly believed that Sisko was the Emissary, and sometimes found it difficult that as well as being a religious icon, he was also her commanding officer.

Kira's family belonged to the Ih'valla D'jarra, which in earlier times, before the occupation would have meant she would have had an artistic occupation.

In 2370, she became romantically involved with Vedek Bareil, but that ended tragically in 2371 when he died during the Cardassian Peace negotiations.

Kira was kidnapped in 2371, and genetically altered to look like Iliana, a Cardassian operative from the Obsidian Order, in an attempt from the Cardassian government to expose Legate Ghemor as a member of the Cardassian Undergroung movement.

Kira became remoantically involved with Fist Minister Shakaar Edon, in 2372, but only lasted a year, after she went to the Kendra Shrine and found it was not meant to be, that they were not destined to walk the same path.

Kira served as surrogate mother to Kirayoshi O'Brien, son of Miles and Keiko, after Keiko was injured during a botanical survey mission. In order to save mother and baby the transfer was necessary. She gave birth to Kirayoshi in 2373 in a traditional Bajoran birthing ceremony.

It was later that year that she learned that Odo had been in love with her for years, but they only got together after intervention from Vic Fontaine.

During the last stages of the Dominion war, Kira got the change to once again take up a career as a Resistance fighter, but this time, helping to liberate the Cardassian homeworld from Dominion occupation.
