Prior to his assignment to Deep Space Nine in 2369, Miles had been operating transporters for 22 years, the last 6 were spent aboard the Enterprise-D.

Miles used to be afraid of spiders, but after an incident on Zayra IV, he kept a Lycosa tarantula named Christina as a pet.

O'Briens family resided in Dublin, Ireland on Earth. Among his ancestors are noted 20th century union leader Sean Aloysius O'Brien and the 11th century Irish King Brian Boru.

He married his wife, Keiko Ishikawa, on stardate 44390, in 2367, in a ceremony in Ten-Forward. A year later, he became a father, when Molly was born. In 2373 he became the proud father of a son, Kirayoshi.

When he is not busy fixing the station, he can be found listening to music, participating in holodeck adventures and playing darts in Quarks.

A the end of the Dominion war, Miles accepted a professorship at Starfleet academy and he, and his family moved back to Earth.

Miles O'Brien was first seen in the Episode: 'Encounter at Farpoint' he transferred to Deep Space Nine in 'Emissary'
