Odo was the security chief aboard Terok Nor whilst it was occupied by the Cardassians during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. He retained that position when the station was taken over by starfleet.

Odo is a shapeshifter, a changeling, or rather a Founder. He was found in the Denorious Belt as an infant, but originates from the Gamma Quadrant.

Odo maintains a humanoid form whilst at work, but he must return to his natural viscous orange fluid every 16 hours. Otherwise he starts to crack up, a painful process, which will eventually lead to his death. He can't hold his shape for more than 16 hours, unless he is inhibited.

Odo doesn't eat, and he has no sense of smell. He does however enjoy watching and listening to the bubbles in various fizzy drinks. He is also unable to render humanoid noses and ears well.

Odo has an uncompromising view of law enforcement, believing that: 'laws change, but justice is justice'

In 2372, as a punishment for being the first changeling to ever kill another of his kind, Odo was sentenced by the great link. His punishment was the loss of his shape-shifting abilities. In essence they made him a solid.

This unique ability was later restored, when Odo merged with a baby changeling.
