Data is a humanoid android, and is recognised as a sentient lifeform, with full civil rights, within the Federation. But attaining those rights was not easy.

Data was the fifth positronic android constructed by Soong, the first 3 were unsuccessful, and the fourth, Lore, exhibited dangerous behaviour and wasa subsequently disassembled

When he was first activated, he was very much like a baby, although fully grown. He had difficulty in learning basic social skills and social niceties had to be built into his programming, including a modesty subroutine.

He is based upon a positronic brain, developed by Soong, from concepts first postulated in the 20th century by Dr. Isaac Asimov. His technical specifications are quite impressive. He contains approximately 24.6kg of Tripolymer Composites, 11.8kg or Molybendenum-Cobalt alloys, and 1.3kg of Bioplast Sheeting. His upper spinal support is polyalloy, whilst his skull is composed of Coremide and Duranium.

Data has a functioning respiratory system, which is generally used for thermal regulation, and a pulse which distributes biochemical lubricants and regulates microhydraulic power throughout his body. His hair is even capable of growth at a controllable rate.

A creative capability was added to his programming, by his mother, who reasoned that without emotions, he would need other ways to express himself.

Data does not require food, yet he occasionally digests a semi-organic nutrient suspension, in a silicon based liquid medium.

Although most of his components are primarily mechanic, cybernetic, positronic, he was still infected by te Psi 2000 virus in 2364, and became intimate with then Chief of Security, Tasha Yar.

After proving to be successful, Data was deactivated and the logs and journals of the Omicron Theta colonists was programmed into him, to give him a better understanding of human society. It also enabled somethng to survive the colony after the Crystalline Entity attacked and destroyed it. Data was left behind when his mother and father departed, and was finally discovered in 2338 by the crew of the starship Tripoli

His hobbies include caring for his cat, Spot, playing poker with the rest of the senior staff, playing the violin, and emulating human behaviour.

Prior to being assigned to the Enterprise, Data started out aboard the USS Trieste. He was temporarily given command of the USS Sutherland in Picard's Armada in 2368, during the Klingon Civil War.
