Chekov was the navigator onboard the original Enterprise under the command of Captain Kirk.

He was an only child, and held the rank of Ensign during the first mission.

Whilst on a survey mission as first officer on the USS Reliant, Chekov came across Khan, a former nemesis of Captain Kirk. Khan used a native Ceti Eel to take control of Chekov's mind, in an attempt to kill the then Admiral Kirk, but was unable to achieve his goal. The Ceti Eel left Chekov, and he made a full recovery.
