Scotty distinguished himself many times as the Chief Engineer aboard the Enterprise, by improvising engineering miracles that more than once saved both the ship and her crew.

Scotty retired from Starfleet in 2294, at the age of 72, having served in Starfleet for 52 years.

Having crashed into a Dyson Sphere whilst on the USS Jenolen, a transport ship, which was taking him to his retirement, he survived by suspending himself inside a transporter beam.. He was later rescued by the crew of the Enterprise-D, in 2369.

Scotty was first seen in the Episode: 'Where no man has gone before'
