Kathryn Janeway started her life in Starfleet as a science officer, serving under the command of Captain Paris (Tom's father) on the AL-Batai.

She is one of the most respected captains in Starfleet.

Janeway's parents were both scientists, her father, Edward, was an astrophysicist, her mother, Gretchen a mathemetician.

Janeway and her family went on frequent backpacking trips, where she was taught how to survive. They also frequently went Camping, but Kathryn was never keen.

Janeway liked to ski, and also loved music, but one of her regrets was that she never learned to play a musical instrument. She also enjoyed playing Tennis, and was an accomplished pool player.

Prior to her assignment to the USS Voyager, Janeway was engaged to marry a man named Mark Hobbes Johnson. In 2374, she finally received word that Mark had married one of his co-workers whilst she was presumed lost.
