When the Borg were forced to co-operate with the crew of the USS Voyager to defeat Species 8472 in early 2374, Captain Janeway requested a Borg Liason. The Collective chose Seven of Nine as that representative, and was the only drone from her cube to survive the incident.

During the conflict which ensues with Species 8472, the Voyager crew were forced to sever Seven's link to the collective by disabling her neurotransceiver in her upper spinal column.

This caused her body to go into shock, and her human immune system began to retake control, which resulted in the Borg implants being rejected.

When Seven regained consciousness, she requested to be returned to the Borg. Her request was later refused by Captain Janeway, on the grounds that she would be endangering herself.

Seven is anethesised, and the EMH removes the majority of her borg components. He replaced her Borg Eyepiece with a prosthetic human eye. Although the EMH managed to remove 82 percent of the implants, Seven is not completely human. The remaining nanoprobes and bioimplants are now an essential part of her body.

Seven is stronger than most humanoids, and is even slightly stronger than Tuvok.

Her parents were noted scientists who ser last seen in the Omega Sector in 2356, after they departed Deep Space 4 in the Raven, NAR-32450, a science vessel, on it's way to the Delta Quadrant. The ship encountered a Borg ship in the B'omar region of space, and ended up crashing on a Class-M moon. Annika was later assimilated by the borg at the age of 6.
