B'Elanna was raised by her mother on a Klingon colony.

She actually joined Starfleet Academy, but dropped out after her second year, as she couldn't comply with neither the rules nor the teachers.

She ended up joining the Maquis, where she served alongside Chakotay, before being transported into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretakers array.

In 2370, a Maquis base was targetted by an intelligent Cardassian weapon known as "Dreadnought". Torres ended up reprogramming the bomb and sent it after a Cardassian installation. For this action, she was reprimaded by Chakotay. Little did she know that the bomb veered off course into the badlands, where it also ended up being transported into the Delta Quadrant where it was on course towards a populated alien planet. Luckily, Torres was able to outsmart the talking bomb, and destroy 'Deardnought' in time

In 2371, B'Elanna was split into both a human and a Klingon by the Vidiians who believed that her Klingon genes could go someway into helping fight against the Phage.

Torres also helped to create a prototype android, which she had to destroy to prevent the continuation of a robotic war.
