Star Trek Voyager is set like it's predecessors in the 24th Century, however in this case, they are exploring the little known region of space called the Delta Quadrant, which is some 70,000 from Federation Space.

If being so far from home was not bad enough, the crew have had to come to terms with their differences. After being transported by the Caretaker, both the Maquis and the Starfleet crews have had to learn to over come their differences, and work together, as one crew - a starfleet crew. In the midst of the adventures they have to learn to function as a team, in an attempt to find their way back home.

Even that task is far out of their reach. Even at maximum warp it will take the crew at least 75 years to get to the border of Federation space, so they are hunting, searching for any way.. new technology, spacial anomoly, that will help accomplish that task, as well as doing what they were made to - explore.
